YZF Sense of Place
Northwest Territories Tourism (NWTT) and Yellowknife Airport (YZF) partnered in 2019 to introduce an exciting new look for the airport.
At YZF, the sightseeing begins the moment you step inside. The terminal showcases breathtaking photography of iconic landmarks and activities, highlighting the stunning beauty of the Northwest Territories. These images not only capture the essence of the region but also promote it as an unforgettable tourism destination. With images taken by professional local photographers and amateurs alike, the prominent displays celebrate the beauty of the NWT and highlight the range of thrilling experiences available to visitors in all five of its regions.
Two large-scale aurora scenes grace the main arrivals area, sparking excitement and anticipation among visitors for the chance to experience the real thing firsthand.Iconic regional attractions grace the walls adjacent to the security line, while a long corridor between both arrivals gates features snapshots that highlight all the activities and adventures awaiting visitors across the Northwest Territories.
Industry, Tourism and Investment & NWT Arts
YZF is proud to greet visitors with a variety of vibrant and interesting art and fine craft displays. Since 2010, the NWT Arts Program has been curating displays that showcase the diversity of work made by artists in the NWT.
NWT art and fine craft is a celebration of stories. The stories of tradition and culture that belong to Indigenous peoples, as well as the stories of settlers who carried their home traditions with them in the form of their work. Many artists collect and prepare sustainable materials from the land and use them in ever-evolving ways to express respect and love of their home. Others are inspired by the natural beauty of the land and the rich culture and tradition of its people, creating work that shares the story of life in the NWT. There are endless techniques and stories, many of which are still waiting to be told.
NWT Arts is a marketing program run by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, Government of the Northwest Territories, which works with NWT artists to share their work and tell their stories. These displays have met with enthusiasm and success and have begun to generate a positive dialogue with visitors and residents. A strong emphasis has been placed on regions and communities, defining a sense of place for the artists and their work. Displays always include the artist’s name and community so their work can be celebrated, and consumers can be assured of who the artist is. Brochure racks and “Where to Buy” sheets are near the displays, ensuring visitors can connect with local retailers and take home their own authentic artwork to remind them of their trip to the NWT. Overall, the arts and tourism sectors naturally complement one another, and the NWT Arts brand identity is heavily rooted in this partnership.
